O gazelle of that gently sloping sandy tract,

have you spent the night aware of how my heart fares?

Or has a yearning born of love assailed you,

banishing your sleep, as mine was banished?

Indeed, she who holds your reins in love

holds your reins in love, and mine as well.

A vision indeed visited us, touched

by weariness from journeying through Tihama and Najd,

seeking shelter, passing over a swift steed's shoulders,

its shoulders bare, or over a valley's floor.

Welcome to that vision, for it

arrived and gladdened me with Su'ad's nearness.

It traveled by night, and my secret thoughts bore me by night toward it,

as though we had arranged to meet.

O phantom, how, when you came by night, did you pass

through the throng of thoughts around my heart?

Care banished sleep from me, and ambition

left my riding camels and fine horses exhausted.

I searched for the best among kings, but found none,

until I found you, my desire and my aim.

Before you, in my youth, I praised a company

on whom I squandered my youthful ardor and my ink.

You raised me above them, until they kindled

the fire of noble virtue from sparks of flint.

You gave me what, had I striven to gather it,

I would have filled my lands with hoarded treasure.

I have been called generous in your presence, yet

my shallow pool is only a remnant of this valley's flood.

I knew that you were a sure resource for me,

so I gave my stores away for honorable remembrance.

You are praised for what we give, for

every generous giver gives from your hand's bounty.

The lush pasture may be praised, but

the clouds' milk is more deserving of praise.

O best of those who bear the sword-belt, whose heart

is like what lies in every sword-belt's sheath.

You made the warriors' 'Antarah seem a coward, and

these radiant favors made Ka'b of Iyad seem a miser.

You have become a sea never shunned by one coming to drink,

or one departing, or traveling at evening or at dawn.

Pasture-seekers across the lands have praised you, and

all scouts were proved right about your land's fertility.

You have been accustomed to generosity since childhood,

and generosity is the finest habit one can acquire.

Had you lived in the days of the ancients, never would

Bakr have boasted of al-Harith ibn 'Abbad.

You rise by your good fortune or your grandsire; indeed,

a man rises only by good fortune and forefathers.

You travel the paths of noble deeds and high renown,

without accepting guidance from any guide.

God bless you! You are, beyond dispute,

the sea of bounty and this assembly's blazing star.

You revived the memory of Abu 'Ali Salih

on every day of battle and every day of combat.

You built a glory whose outline cannot be reached

from Idris's vantage, nor from Shaddad's.

O son of the Mirdasids, whose breasts,

    even toward the ignorant, are free of rancor;

    مِثلَ النُجومِ كَثيرَةَ الأَعدادِ

    the triumphant possessors of virtues

    as numerous as the stars;

lions whose lairs are thrones—and seldom

are thrones found to be the lairs of lions!

Bright-faced, they deem the vilest wrong

the hiding of gleaming swords within their sheaths.

The Imamate did not name you 'Mainstay'

until it saw in you its strongest pillar.

I made inquiry—and I am your sincere adviser—

and uncovered pure affection and true friendship.

I found your rank above all other ranks

with the Imam, son of the guiding Imam.

I returned toward you, having secured your wishes,

and with enviers enraged and enemies abased.

I am, as you think of me, a witness

for you; suffice me in place of all other witnesses.

For I am he who, if your foot's hollow trod the dust,

would place it in the black of my eye and my heart's core,

as an honor through the ages, and a fellowship

    with eternal tent-ropes and pegs.

My camels do not pass beyond your shelter, nor are they seen

except toward you, their forelegs churning.
