Do not go too far in forsaking him and shunning him.

His abandoning sleep should suffice you, without your abandoning him.

He has strained beyond endurance for you, and has

nothing in what he seeks but his utmost effort.

How often he has forgotten you and returned as an enthralled lover!

And embers may flare after dying down.

I would ransom her who settled in a valley, whose heart

is harder on lovers than its solid rock.

She swayed through it, as though a waft of ambergris

were spreading among its uplands and hollows.

    وَالحُبُّ أَقتَلُهُ لَواحِظُ غِيدِهِ

    A graceful beauty whose glance slays every lovesick lover;

and love is deadliest in the glances of its graceful beauties.

A white gazelle at Rama who, despite his frailty, hunts none

but proud men when he turns away.

The rose has his cheek's redness, and the bough the sway

of his figure, and the gazelle the length of his neck.

I love the darkness because its crescent

is like his bracelet, and its stars like his necklaces.

O you who blame the yearning lover, leave him, for he only

wastes away from his long passion and sleeplessness.

He persisted in his anguish and suffering

when he saw you persist in reproaching him.

And a mount, both armpits raw from extreme footsoreness

and exhaustion amid its descents and ascents—

journeys have worn it down until its fat

has melted beneath its girth and saddle frames.

He drives it into the wilderness's heart—a man whose heart

in adversity is broader than the wilderness's desert wastes.

And he heads for a bright-browed man of Amir's noblest stock,

like the sea, except that coming to drink from him is sweet.

Benevolence has encamped among his tents,

his palaces, his wall, and his tent-pole.

The lion's might is small beside his might,

and rain's bounty is paltry beside his bounty.

A king whose might is hoped for, and who is feared by

one who scarcely fears his own deity.

He lavished gifts until his fingertips begged for relief

from his wealth, and his wealth from his squandering it.

And al-Muizz built glories without relying

for them on his fathers and forefathers.

So it is as though bounty's downpour came from his downpour,

or its stock were drawn from his stock.

Souls find their life in his promise,

and their death in his anger and threats.

He flares in anger, then pardons out of compassion,

and rain follows its lightning and thunder.

Good fortune is among his attendants and slaves,

and victory among his helpers and troops.

How wondrous is what the Imam has done! For he is

the most faithful of all creation to his pledges.

The kindness he bestowed in succession did not suffice,

until he followed it with his led horses and banners,

and with his sword, his belt, and his mantle,

and his court's charter and his cloaks' embroidery.

No one is nobler in character and disposition

among men than he who displays bounty and renews it,

on a day with no festival; yet his bounty

is a festival for one who came to him, like his own festival.

Does the Imam know today that he

has bestowed his favor on the most deserving of his servants?

They gained a position that shattered their enemy's mainstay,

and his enemy's, their envier's, and his envier's.

    وَالغيلُ لا يَحميهِ غَيرُ أُسودِهِ

    And they protected the lands of the two Raqqas from foes;

and none but its lions guard the thicket.

O you—when the enemy hears my praises

of you, rage makes his jugular's cord stand out!

God has renewed allegiance and increased it

    through successors, renewal upon renewal.

May the caliph's delegation gladden you, for indeed

success has come to you with its arrival.

So the fullness of this good fortune comes from his favor,

and the attainment of this support from his support.
