أَشَدُّ مِن فاقَةِ الزَمانِ

أَشَدُّ مِن فاقَةِ الزَمانِ

مَقامُ حُرٍّ عَلى هَوانِ

مَقامُ حُرٍّ عَلى هَوانِ

Harsher than the poverty of the times

Is a free man's living in humiliation.

فَاستَرزِقِ اللَه وَاستَعِنهُ

فَاستَرزِقِ اللَه وَاستَعِنهُ

فَإِنَّهُ خَيرُ مُستَعانِ

فَإِنَّهُ خَيرُ مُستَعانِ

So ask God for sustenance and seek His help,

For He is the best to turn to for help.

وَإِن نَبا مَنزِلٌ بِحُرٍّ

وَإِن نَبا مَنزِلٌ بِحُرٍّ

فَمِن مَكانٍ إِلى مَكانِ

فَمِن مَكانٍ إِلى مَكانِ

And if a dwelling proves inhospitable to a free man,

Then go from one place to another.
