وَتُمرِعُand grows lush مِنهُfrom it مُمحِلَةُthe barren parts of الفِجاجِthe mountain passes
A greeting of peace that weighs down mature, swift camels,
and makes barren mountain passes grow lush,

upon a king who takes every crisis by surprise,
then overpowers with resolve whomever he surprises.
أَعَفُّthe chastest of الناسِpeople مُعتَجِراًwrapping his head بِبُردٍwith a mantle
وَأَبهىand the most splendid of الناسِpeople مُعتَصِباًbinding his head بِتاجِwith a crown
The chastest of men with a mantle wrapped about his head,
and the most splendid of men with a crown upon his brow.
يَفيضُpours forth بَنانُهُhis fingertips وَالغَيثُwhile the rain مُكدٍwithholds

His fingertips pour forth while the rain withholds,
and his face shines while the night is dark.
غَنِيٌّhaving no need بِالعُلىthrough eminence عَنof كُلِّany وَصفٍdescription
كَماjust as اِستَغنىhas no need النَهارُdaylight عَنِof السِراجِthe lamp
In his loftiness he needs no description,
just as daylight has no need of a lamp.
يَجِلُّis too exalted عَنfor المَديحِpraise وَأَيُّand whatever مَدحٍpraise
مَدَحتَyou praise بِهِwith it المُعِزَّal-Muʿizz فَأَنتَthen you are هاجيa satirist
He is too exalted for praise; whatever praise
you give al-Muʿizz, you are disparaging him.
فَلاso do not يَغرُركَlet it deceive you مِنهُfrom him لَيانُgentleness of خُلقٍtemperament
فَكَمfor many a ماءٍbody of water يُغرِّقُdrowns وَهوَwhile it is ساجيstill
So let his gentle disposition not deceive you:
for water often drowns even while lying still.

Noble through both parents, he is claimed
by bloodlines untainted in their mingling.
أَباAbu (father of) العُلوانِal-ʿUlwān ياO مَنone whom لاnot أُحابِيI show undue favor
بِحَقٍّat truth's expense فيin هَواهُlove for him وَلاnor أُداجيI flatter insincerely
O Abu al-ʿUlwān, you whom I do not favor
at truth's expense in loving you, nor flatter falsely:
أَتانيcame to me مِنكَfrom you غِبَّafter العِيدِthe feast عَتبٌa reproach
صَدَعتَyou shattered بِهِwith it الحَشاthe inner heart صَدعَas one shatters الزُجاجِglass
A reproach from you reached me after the feast;
with it you shattered my heart as glass is shattered.
وَأَزعَجَنيand it unsettled me فَأَزعَجتُso I roused القَوافيthe rhymes
إِلَيكَtoward you لِفَرطِbecause of the intensity of ذاكَthat الإِنزِعاجِdisquiet
And it unsettled me, so I roused the rhymes
toward you, so intense was that disquiet.
وَضاقَand narrowed بيَaround me الفَضاءُthe open space وُرُبَّand many a ضِيقٍhardship
يَؤُولُleads إِلىto اتِّساعٍspaciousness وَانفِراجِand relief
And the wide world closed in on me; yet many a hardship
leads to spaciousness and relief.
أَتَحسَبُنيdo you think me شُغِلتُI was preoccupied وَأَيُّand what شُغلٍoccupation
سِوىother than شُغلِيmy occupation بِمَدحِكَwith praising you وَابتِهاجيand my rejoicing
Do you think I was preoccupied? What occupation
but my work of praising you and my rejoicing,
وَنَظمُand composing غَرائِبِrarities of الكَلِمِwords اللَواتيwhich
يَبينُbecomes clear بِهِنَّthrough them عُذريmy excuse وَاِحتِجاجيand my defense
and composing rare words that
make my excuse and my defense clear?
فَكُنso be بِيtoward me مُحسِناًwell-disposed ظَنّاًin judgment فَقَلبِيfor my heart
لِوُدّكَto your affection غَيرُnot مُنغَلِقِclosed الرِتاجِat the gate
So think well of me, for my heart
keeps its gate open to your affection.
وَدُونَكَand take this فَاِستَمِعso listen نَجوىconfidences of مُحِبٍّa lover
يُناجيconfides in مِنكَin you أَكرَمَthe noblest مَنone whom يُناجيhe confides in
And here—listen to a lover's confidences,
who confides in you, the noblest of those he addresses,
لِيُوضِحَto make clear عُذرَهُhis excuse إِيضاحَas clearly as صُبحٍdawn
جَلَتdispelled أَنوارُهُits lights ظُلَمَthe gloom الدَياجيof dark nights
to make his excuse as clear as dawn
whose lights have dispelled the gloom of dark nights.
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif حَجَجتُI made pilgrimage إِلَيكَto you عاماًfor a year
لَماwould not اِستَكثَرتُI deem excessive ذاكَthat عَلىupon حَجاجيmy brow ridge
So I swear, were I to make pilgrimage to you for a year,
I would not deem it too much, even upon my brow.
إِلىto مَلِكٍa king يَغيبُvanishes سُرُورُthe joy of قَلبيmy heart
لِغَيبَتِهِbecause of his absence وَيَنقَطِعُand ceases اِبتِهاجيmy rejoicing
To a king—my heart's joy vanishes
in his absence, and my rejoicing ceases.
وَتَعتَلِجُand seethes الصَبابَةُardent longing فيin فُؤاديmy heart
لِفِرقَتِهِat parting from him أَشَدَّthe fiercest الاعتِلاجِturmoil
And longing seethes within my heart
at parting from him, with the fiercest turmoil.
مَتىwhenever اِختَلَجَتtwitched بِقُربٍat nearness مِنهُto him عَينيmy eye
فَقَدthen indeed قَرَّتit found repose بِذاكَin that الاختِلاجِtwitching
Whenever my eye twitches at nearness to him,
it finds repose in that very twitch.
كَلاهُmay He guard him اللَهُGod مِنfrom نُوَبِthe calamities of اللَياليthe nights
وَبَلَّغنيand let me attain الَّذيwhat أَناI مِنهُfrom him راجيhope for
May God guard him from the calamities of the nights,
and grant me what I hope for from him.
