كَذاthus لاnot تَزالُyou cease رَفيعَexalted in الرُتَبrank
كَثيرَabounding in العَدُوِّenemies كَثيرَabounding in الغَلبvictory
Thus may you ever remain exalted in rank,
Thus you remain, of high rank
with many enemies and many victories.
With many enemies and much conquest
وَقَدand indeed وَهَبَbestowed اللَهُGod هَذاthis النَعيمَbliss
وَماand not يَرجِعُgoes back اللَهُGod فيماon what وَهَبHe bestowed
And God has indeed bestowed this bliss,
God has granted you this blessing
and God does not revoke what He has bestowed.
And God does not take back what He gives
وَمَنand whoever عاشَlives أَبصَرَwill see فيamong حاسِدِيكَyour enviers
وَفِيمَنand among those who يُعادِيكَare hostile to you أَمراًa thing عَجَبastonishing
And whoever lives will see among your enviers,
Whoever lives will see in your enviers
and among those hostile to you, an astonishing thing.
And in those hostile to you, a wondrous thing
أَرادُواthey wished تَمَلُّكَto possess ماwhat فيin يَدَيكَyour hands
وَماتُواand they died وَلَمand not يُقضَwas fulfilled ذاكَthat الأَرَبdesire
They wished to possess what was in your hands,
They wanted to possess what was in your hand
and they died without that desire being fulfilled.
And died without gaining that profit
وَكَمand how often طَلَبُواthey wished لَكَfor you بُؤسَthe misery of الحَياةِlife
فَماbut not أَنجَحَmade successful اللَهُGod ذاكَthat الطَلَبwish
How often they wished you a wretched life,
How much they wanted misery upon you
but God never let that wish succeed.
But God did not allow that wish
فَلاso do not تَحفِلَنَّpay any heed بِصَرفِto the reversals of الزَمانِtime
فَأَنتَfor you are المُظَفَّرُthe victorious one كَيفَhowever اِنقَلَبit turns
So pay no heed to the reversals of time,
So do not worry about the passage of time
for you are victorious, however it turns.
For you are the victor, however it turns
وَلاand do not تُبقِretain مالاًwealth فَرِزقُfor the sustenance of الكَريمِthe generous man

مcontinuation of 'the generous man' يَأتيهِcomes to him مِنfrom حَيثُwhere لاnot يَحتَسِبhe expects

And do not hoard wealth, for the generous man's sustenance
And leave no money, for the generous man's livelihood
comes to him from where he does not expect.
Comes to him from where he does not expect
إِذاif سَلَّمَkeeps safe اللَهُGod رُوحَthe life of الأَميرِthe prince
فَأَهونَthen the slightest شَيءٍthing ذَهابُthe loss of الذَهَبgold
If God preserves the prince's life,
If God takes the soul of the Emir
then the loss of gold is the slightest concern.
The loss of gold is the easiest thing
وَمَنand whoever كَسِبَwins الحَمدpraise فيin الخافِقَينِeast and west

فَلَيسَthen he does not يُباليcare عَلىabout ماwhat كَسَبhe has earned
And whoever wins praise in east and west
And he who earns praise in both worlds
cares nothing for what he has earned.
Does not care about what he earned
فَخُذso take ماwhat صَفاis unclouded مِنof لَذيذِthe delights of الحَياةِlife
وَدَعand leave لِسِواكَto others besides you الأَذىpain وَالنَصَبand toil
So take the unclouded pleasures of life,
So take the choice of sweet life
and leave pain and toil to others.
And leave harm and toil to others
وَلاand do not تَخبَstore away إِلّاexcept شِفارَthe edges of السُيوفِswords
وَهذِيand these الرِجالَmen وَهذِيand these الخُطَبspeeches
And store up nothing but the edges of swords,
Do not hide anything but the blades of swords
and these men, and these speeches.
And these men and these undertakings
لَعَمرِيby my life لَقَدindeed قُمتَyou have performed نِعمَexcellent is القِيامِthe performance
وَجَمَّلَand has adorned ذِكرُكَyour renown ذِكرَthe renown of العَرَبthe Arabs
By my life, you have performed your duty splendidly,
By my life, you have arisen well
and your renown has adorned the renown of the Arabs.
And your mention adorns the mention of Arabs

And delegations from the lands have made pilgrimage to you,
Caravans of countries came to you
from every pass among far-distant hills.
From every deep ravine

وَقَومٌand other people لَهُمthey have كَعبَةٌa Kaaba فيin حَلَبAleppo
For some people have a Kaaba in the Hijaz,
Some have a Kaaba in the Hijaz
and others have a Kaaba in Aleppo.
And some have a Kaaba in Aleppo
فَهَذِيso this one تُحَجُّis visited in pilgrimage لِغَفرِfor forgiveness of الذُنوبِsins
وَهَذيand this one تُحَجُّis visited in pilgrimage لِبَذلِfor the bestowal of الرَغَبdesired gifts
The former is visited in pilgrimage for the forgiveness of sins,
These make pilgrimage for forgiveness of sins
and the latter is visited in pilgrimage for the bestowal of desired gifts.
And those for bestowing favors
وَفيand on الدَستِthe throne أَروَعُan awe-inspiring man مِثلُlike الحُسامa keen sword
سَريعُquick to الرِضاcontentment لاnot سَريعُquick to الغَضَبanger
And on the throne is an awe-inspiring man, like a keen sword,
In hand the finest example of swords
quick to be pleased, not quick to anger.
Quick to pleasure, not quick to anger
نَظيرُthe equal of الهِزَبرِthe lion إِذاwhen ماfor emphasis استُثِيرَhe is roused

وَندُّand the peer of الغَمامِthe rain cloud إِذاwhen ماfor emphasis اِنسَكَبit pours down
A lion's equal when he is roused,
The like of hail when aroused
and a rain cloud's peer when it pours down.
And clouds when poured forth
إِذاif كَتَبَhe grants in writing المُلكَownership ليto me خالِداًlasting

كَتَبتُI write لَهُfor him مِثلَthe like of ماwhat قَدalready كَتَبhe has written
If he grants me lasting ownership in writing,
If the King wrote immortality for me
I write for him the like of what he has written:
I would write the like for him of what he wrote
مَدائِحُpoems of praise تَبقىendure بَقاءَfor the duration of الزَمانِtime

poems of praise that endure as long as time,
Eulogies that remain as time remains
and live on within it as the ages endure.
And are immortal therein for ages
أَباO father of صالِحٍSalih لَيسَnot كُلُّall الكَلامِspeech

O Abu Salih, not all speech
Abu Salih, not all words
endures, nor is every utterance loved.
Remain, nor is all speech loved
خَدَمتُكَI served you وَالرَأسُwhile my head وَحفُwas thick with السَوادِblack hair

I served you while my head was thick with black hair,
I served you when my hair was black
and behold, it is white as foam.
And here it is, white like seeds
وَمِثلُكَand one like you يَطلُبُseeks مِثليone like me نَداهُhis bounty

And one like me seeks the bounty of one like you,
And the like of you seeks the like of me, his equal
and receives more than he asked for.
And he comes to him even better than he sought
