قَدindeed كانَhad been صَبرِيmy patience عِيلexhausted فيin طَلَبِpursuit of العُلاeminence
حَتّىuntil استَنَدتُI leaned إِلىon ابنِson of إِسماعِيلاIsma‘il
My patience had indeed been exhausted in pursuit of eminence,
My patience in seeking exaltation was long
until I leaned on Ibn Isma‘il.
Until I relied on the son of Ismail
فَظَفِرتُso I attained بِالحَطَرِwith high standing (likely a typo for khatar) الجَليلِgreat وَلَمand has not يَزَلceased
يَحوِيattains الجَلِيلَgreatness مَنwhoever استَعانَsought help from جَلِيلاًa great man
Thus I attained great standing; and always
So I obtained the sublime rank, which will not cease
does one who seeks a great man's aid attain greatness.
To contain the sublime one who sought the aid of the sublime
لَولاwere it not for الوَزِيرُthe vizier أَبُوfather of عَلِيٍّ‘Ali لَمnot أَجِدI find
أَبَداًever إِلىto الشَرَفِhonor العَلِيِّlofty سَبِيلاa path
Were it not for the vizier Abu ‘Ali, I would not have found
Were it not for the minister Abu Ali, I would have never
a path to lofty honor, ever.
Found a way to the most high honor
إِنif كانَhad رَيبُvicissitudes of الدَهرِtime قَبَّحَmade ugly ماwhat مَضىpassed
عِندِيto me فَقَدthen indeed صارَhas become القَبِيحُthe ugly جَميلاbeautiful
If time's vicissitudes had made the past ugly
If the vicissitudes of fate had marred the past
to me, the ugly has now become beautiful.
The ugly has now become beautiful to me
وَأَجَلُّand the noblest ماwhat جَعَلَmade الرِجالُmen صِلاتِهِمtheir gifts
لِلراغِبِينَto the seekers العِزَّhonor وَالتَبجِيلاand esteem
And the noblest gifts that men bestow
And the greatest reason men esteem their alliances
on those who seek them are honor and esteem.
Is to seek honor and veneration
اليَومَtoday أَدرَكتُI attained الَّذيthat which أَناI طالِبٌseeking
وَالأَمسِand yesterday كانَwas طِلابُهُits pursuit تَعلِيلاconsolation with hopes
Today I have attained what I seek,
Today I obtained what I sought
while yesterday its pursuit was mere consolation.
While yesterday seeking it was an impossibility
