O Messenger of the Sovereign, my soul gasps,
O Messenger of the King, my soul aspires
and my sins are hindrances that hold me back.
Yet my sins hinder and obstruct

ليسَ للزَّائفِ المُبَهرَجِ سُوقُ
How often I have sought acceptance, yet
How often I longed for acceptance, but
there is no market for a counterfeit, debased coin.
The pretentious fraud has no place

Whenever I said, 'I have reached righteousness,'
Whenever I say I have attained righteousness
disobedience claimed me with its two witnesses.
My misdeeds refute me with evidence

And it is unlikely that right guidance will be heeded
It's far-fetched that hearts steeped in sin
by hearts in which waywardness has its claims.
Would heed advice or rights

Sins have fettered me—indeed, intoxicated me:
Sins shackled me, nay intoxicated me
so a morning draught that never ends, and an evening draught.
So dawn never breaks, only gloom

Gray hair has not frightened me—indeed, it has not frightened me,
Neither old age cautioned me, nor was I
though it is fashioned from the dye of death.
Cautious, though it's the dye of ruin

Every day, upon the partings of the hair, from it comes
Each day of separation has upon leaving
a sword—each one gives a taste of death.
A sword that pierces my dove

What excuse have I after fifty years have passed,
What is my excuse after fifty years slipped by
like lightning that flashed over a sea?
Like flashes of lightning across the sea

Life's capital—I have gained nothing from it
Of life's capital I gained naught
but regret and a memory that stirs longing.
Except sorrow and longing's ache

And despite that, hope abides;
And yet hope remains steadfast
no locks have loosened from me or from it.
Neither slackening its grip on me nor it

O intercessor at the Reckoning, be an intercessor for me
O intercessor on the day of judgement, intercede for me
before it; perhaps the breaches can be closed.
Before the gates are shut tight

And with the caravan, from my prayers of blessing and my longing
With my prayers, my fervor and greetings
and my greetings, are gladdening messages that delight.
Are heralds aspiring to delight

So perhaps I may win from you a reply:
Perhaps through you I may gain a refreshing reply
within it, a chanting camel-driver urges me toward your shelter.
That guides me towards your abode

Indeed, your returning greetings—we know
For the return of greetings from you we know
it, and a truthful, trusted one has conveyed it.
Is true and verified news

So blessings and peace be upon Ahmed
it is musk, its fragrance inhaled.
He is musk, his scent finely diffused

May God have mercy on whoever prays for his brother,
May Allah have mercy on one who prays for his brother
where there is hope that those who lag behind will catch up.
Where latecomers hope to arrive into the fold
