O Har, O possessor of kindness and noble traits,
O friend of virtue and morals
sweet and pleasing.
Of pleasurable punishment
اعذُرexcuse أخاكَyour brother فليسfor he is not منof
تِلكَthat الرَّفاهةcomfort والرَّفاغَهand abundance
Excuse your brother, for he has no share
Excuse your brother, for he is not
in that comfort and abundance.
Of such luxury and frivolity
ماnot العيشُlife إلاexcept بُلغَةٌsustenance
وأَخوكand your brother لاnot يَعدُوgoes beyond بَلاغَهwhat suffices him
Life is nothing but sustenance,
Life is but an expression
and your brother goes no further than what suffices him.
While your brother does not exceed his eloquence
ولقدand indeed رحلتُI set out بِسُحرَةٍbefore dawn
واللّيلَand the night يُلبسُنِيclothes me صِباغَهits dye
And indeed I set out before dawn,
I traveled at daybreak
while night clothed me in its dye.
As the night cloaked me in darkness

And the mount's limbs were steeped in dye,
The horse pranced in the meadow
whose wet mud kept kissing me.
Shade enveloping me completely

Guarding myself, grappling
Vigilant and experienced
with livelihood's sought-after quarry.
In the struggle of troubled life
والعجزُand helplessness أنthat طالتreached far يَدِيmy hand
وتَقاصَرَتand fell short لابنfor the son of المراغَهal-Maragha
And helplessness is that my hand reached far,
And my inability though my hands are long
yet fell short before Ibn al-Maragha.
And fall short for the son of struggle
وأناand I الّذيthe one whom علمتhas known معدٌّMaʿadd
فيin الفصاحةِclarity of speech والبلاغهand eloquence
And I am the one Maʿadd has known
I who taught excellence
for clarity of speech and eloquence.
In eloquence and rhetoric
إنif كانَhas عَطَّلَleft idle مشهديmy arena
دهريmy fate وألزمنيand imposed on me فراغهits idleness
If my arena has been left idle
If time has impeded my status
by my fate, which has imposed its idleness on me,
And compelled me to idleness
فلقدthen indeed عمرتI filled بكلwith all ماthat

then indeed I have filled—with all
I have lived with all that
that shames it—its inn and its garden.
Would shame his hotels and gardens
