وذيand one with سَفَرٍa journey أطلَّhas drawn near علىin وِفازhaste
I marvel at one full of self-delusion and pride,
I'm amazed by one so deceived and prideful,
And at one whose hurried journey has drawn near.
One journeying as if along smooth sands,
تبَسَّطَhe indulged freely فيin الذّنوبِsins وفيand in الخَطاياtransgressions
ويَشهَدُand he attests بالقِصاصِto retribution وبالتَّجازيand to requital
He indulges freely in sins and transgressions,
Reveling in sins and transgressions,
Yet attests to retribution and requital.
Yet claiming requital and just recompense.
يُجاهِرُhe openly defies بالكبائِرِwith grave sins عَدلَthe justice of رَبٍّa Lord
علىfor مثقالِthe weight of ذرّتِهاtheir mote مُجازِone who requites
With grave sins he openly defies the justice of a Lord
Openly committing major sins, though just is the Lord,
Who requites even a mote's weight of them.
Who weighs their smallest speck in recompense.

Opposed to truth, he finds comfort
Defying truth, resting complacently
In the deceits of sophistry and metaphor.
In the deceits of equivocation and metaphor.

ومُهلِكُهُand his destroyer يُحاذيdraws alongside أوor يُوازيkeeps pace
He strides beyond the earth in far-reaching hopes,
He crossed the earth with hopes so lofty,
While his destroyer draws alongside or keeps pace.
Though his end lies close, keeping pace.
تُقَدِّرُyou suppose وَيكَwoe to you أنَّكthat you are منهُfrom him ناجٍsafe
وإنّكَand indeed you are فيin حَبائلهhis snares لَنَازِsurely leaping
You suppose—woe to you—that you are safe from him,
You reckon you'll escape, but
Yet you are surely leaping within his snares.
You're ensnared in its coils, helpless prey.
وماand not الإنسانُman مَهماhowever much حادَhe turned aside عَنهُaway from him
سِوىbut عُصفُورةٍa sparrow فيin كفِّthe palm of بازِa hawk
And man, however much he turns away from him,
Man, however far he strays from the path
Is nothing but a sparrow in a hawk's grasp.
Is no more than a sparrow in the grip of a falcon.
