    فما عَمرتَ ديارَ الهُون والحِلَلا

    You have ruined a lasting home you were to inhabit;

yet you have not built up the dwellings of abasement and the encampments.

So today you shed the robes you layered high,

since you did not layer with them robes of piety.

No curtains you have lowered can bar death,

nor blunt it, though you crown them with canopies.

O dry-eyed one, if you were fair, you ought

to make tears flow, not streams among the trees.

Do not exult in the abundance bestowed on you,

for it is embezzled wealth, though you call it revenue.

And had you paid with a soul you are destroying,

you would have led it to a first draught of reward—indeed, a second.

Indeed, by your Lord—with sin's burdens tripping you up—

you have surely cloaked yourself in a grievous, enormous sin.

What delights you in a dwelling, when it is as though you had already

come to stand amid its ruins, yourself a ruin?

But how can one whose foot has slipped stand firm

upon the Path, when it will bear no slipping?

Or how can you raise up something flawed, presenting it

to One who sees it clearly and accepts no flaw?
