الصَّبرُpatience أجمَلُnobler لوif only أطَقتI could bear الأَجمَلاthe nobler course
وأَخفُّand lighter لوif صَدقwere genuine التجُّملُcomposure مَحمَلاas a burden
Patience is nobler, if only I could bear the nobler course.
Patience is most beautiful if borne
And lighter to bear, if composure were genuine.
And lighter if sincerity in suffering is true
ياO واحِداًpeerless one عَمَّencompassed الجميعَeveryone مُصابُهُhis loss
ماnot كنتَyou were إلاexcept عارِضاًa raincloud مُتَهلّلاradiant
O peerless one, whose loss has overwhelmed all,
O you who brought all to grief
You were nothing but a radiant raincloud.
You were but a guest briefly halting
قُدّمتyou were sent ahead قبليbefore me فيin الوُفاةdeath وهكذاand thus

You were taken before me in death, and thus
You went before me into death, thus
The best go first, one after another.
The good always go first, first
ولقدand indeed تَخَرَّمتِsnatched away المَنيّةdeath شَطرناhalf of us

And death had indeed snatched away half of us,
And death has certainly pierced our ranks
And I remained in the other half, which was the better.
And I remain in a better part

We lived so for a time in happiness,
We lived an era in blessing
And your bounty bore every crushing burden.
While you bear every heavy burden
وسَددتand you filled خُلَّةَthe gap مَنof those who مَضىpassed away لَمّاwhen انقضَىtheir lives ended

You filled the void of those who passed when their days were done,
And you sealed the breach of those who passed
And those remaining faced an approaching calamity.
And those remaining met tribulations
وكفيتنيand you shielded me وكَفَيتَهُمand you shielded them ماwhat يُتّقىis feared

You shielded me and shielded them from what is feared,
And you spared me and spared them what should be feared
And cleared time's calamity from us, and it vanished.
And warded off the blows of fate from us and it cleared

Then let every worthy assembly weep for you,
So let every good soul weep for you
And let lover and hater alike lament you.
And let those who loved or hated mourn you

And may an unsullied remembrance of you endure,
And let a brilliant memory of you remain
As long as pitch-black night departs and returns.
As long as the ignorant night turns and day breaks

لَمّاwhen تَفَرَّطِناyou went before us فكَانand it became كَلاlike 'no' ولاand 'no'
You graced our companionship and our long years,
You beautified our company and lengthened our days
When you went before us, that span became as brief as 'no, no.'
When we were dispersed it was neither this way nor that
ياO مَنone who تَواضعwas humbled قَدرُهُhis rank عنbeside رِفعَةٍan eminence

ماthere is no فَوقَabove ماwhat أَصبحتَyou have come to be فيهِin it مُعتَلىheight to ascend
O you whose rank was humble beside such eminence—
O you whose worth surpassed loftiness
No height lies above the station you now hold.
Above what you have reached wavering

Receive, then, your full portion with your Lord,
So attain with your Lord your full share
And alight in His presence, for you have reached your destination.
And alight in His presence for you have reached the halt

For His sake you forsook beautiful women, and ever remained
For Him you left the vanishing and never
Devoted to enduring righteous deeds.
Ceased to be given to good works

No day of your life passed unadorned;
No day of your life passed fruitless
Rather, each was jeweled and velvet-clad with piety.
But it was sweetened with piety and made fruitful

And night knows in you a gaunt, humble man,
The night knows from you a reverent vigil
Pouring forth streaming tears through it before God.
To God pouring out copious tears
ماnot ذاقَhe tasted طعمَthe taste النّومِof sleep إلاexcept خِلسَةًa stolen snatch

He tasted sleep only in a stolen snatch,
Tasting not the savor of sleep
That grudged his eyelids the kohl of sleep.
Except fleetingly, denying his eyelids to close

So he folded it away between his bows and prostrations,
So He inundated you between bowing and prostrating
Bedewed and drenched with the tears of his piety.
With the tears of His piety, pleading and humble

His inmost parts are bruised, while his tongue
His heart scorched and his tongue
Offers God the Book in measured recitation.
Guiding the Book to God rhythmically chanting

What can I hope for after laying you in the earth?
What can I hope for after your burial in the soil
In vain! A hopeful man has missed what he hoped for.
Alas the hoper is wrong in what he hoped

O Giver of the precious treasure, You have taken him;
O Granter of the precious soul that You have taken
Then make him welcome in the abode of Your good pleasure.
Make it in the Abode of Pleasure accepted

And I had lost his namesake before him,
And I have lost before it a namesake
Drenched in the heart's blood, slaughtered.
Splattered with the blood of my heart, slain

Loss upon loss, bereavement following bereavement.
Grief upon grief succeed in its bereavements
And as I have been bereaved, my own end is to be mourned.
And just as I mourned them my utmost is to mourn

I consoled myself for them both, yet often
I consoled myself from them and perhaps
Weeping overcame my fortitude and flowed unchecked.
Weeping overcame my composure and flowed

O arrow that bides its appointed time,
O piercing arrow of fate
One day you must strike the fatal spot.
One day you must strike down the slain

Pardon me, Abu Marwan: I lived and did not die
Excuse me Abā Mārwān I lived and did not die
Of grief for you, though my death would have been easier.
Relying on you and my death would have been easier

Go, then, as rain departs, having revived the hills
So go as the alive go more lofty
On high, and left every lowland drenched.
And leave every low valley

For you have left a lasting edifice of honor,
For you have left an enduring structure of truth
That stays new, while all new things pass into decay.
Remaining new and the new itself decays

Would that I had died before you, going first,
Would that I had died before you a precursor
And you had remained after me, steadfast and radiant.
And you remained after me steady and calm

Our free men and our captives would seek refuge with you,
To you would come our freed and prisoner
And you would loose the fetter of every afflicted captive.
And you would loosen the shackles of every afflicted sufferer

The days will never bring forth a noble man like you,
Days do not fail to bring the like of your glory
So openhanded, so giving in fulfilling duties, so unstinting,
Brighter, more generous in rights and more generous still

So firm of resolve in the cause of God,
And fiercer in his devotion to God
So long of stride through hardships, so eloquent.
And stronger in resolve through adversities and I say

I wish your kindness had been mingled with some coldness,
I would wish your piety mixed with some dryness
So my heart might have an excuse if it ceased to grieve.
To be my excuse within my heart if it asked

But creation has commended you and risen
Above any fault the eyes could plead as an excuse.
Above any fault the eyes might imply

May God bless you, one who has gone before,
God’s prayers upon you from the first
Whose honor shone forth, so that he was the finest.
His blessings manifest and the finest model

Watering, along with learning, the lofty, gracious one.
Quenching knowledge luminous and perfect

Opening a locked gate into Paradise.
Opening unto Paradise a gate locked

After you, I have prepared two states, those two alone:
I prepared after you two conditions which are
Patience I bind fast, and tears I leave unchecked.
Patience I restrain and a neglected tear

My eye streamed for you, for you had gladdened it,
The eye has neglected you as it has assured
And faithfulness to its pledge requires that it stream.
And been faithful to its pact with you to neglect

No pleasure in life remains for me after you.
No delight remains in life for me without you
And if indeed its taste has grown bitter in what once was sweet,
And if its taste turned bitter in what dissolved

I have whispered to your grave, with tears streaming,
I spoke to your grave with copious tears
And seen your form pictured in my mind.
And saw your figure in my mind pictured clear

And I wished as we lived together we together
Since your brother missed being the first to go.
Would be if your company missed being the swiftest
