يا رسولَ الإلهِ هل
أناI فيin الرّكبِthe caravan مُغتدِيsetting out at dawn
أنا في الرّكبِ مُغتدِي
O Messenger of God, am
O Messenger of God, am I
I setting out at dawn with the caravan?
Among the caravan transgressing,
ليتَwould that شعريmy knowledge تلهُّفاًin anguished longing
ليتَ شعري تلهُّفاً
مِنfrom شجٍa grief-stricken one عنكfrom you مُبعَدِkept far away
مِن شجٍ عنك مُبعَدِ
Would that I knew! An anguished yearning
I wonder yearning
from one grief-stricken, kept far from you.
Far from you anguished,
هلquestion marker أقُولنI shall indeed say لِمُقلتيto my eye
هل أقُولن لِمُقلتي
وهيَwhile it بالدَّمعin tears ترتديclothes itself
وهيَ بالدَّمع ترتدي
Shall I indeed say to my eye,
Shall I say to my love
as it robes itself in tears,
As she is clad in tears,
والسُّرىand night travel قدalready رمتhas cast it بهاit
والسُّرى قد رمت بها
فيin حِمىthe sanctuary of ذلكthat النَّدِيّthe generous one
في حِمى ذلك النَّدِيّ
and night travel has cast it
And Sura has cast it
into that generous one's sanctuary:
In the sanctuary of that valley,
اجزَعِيgrieve أوor تَجلَّدِيbe steadfast
اجزَعِي أو تَجلَّدِي
هذهthis دارُthe abode of أحمَدAhmad
هذه دارُ أحمَد
"Grieve, or be steadfast;
Be resolute or be patient
this is Ahmad's abode.
This is the house of Ahmed
هذِهthis تربةُthe soil of الهُداthe guides (first part)
هذِه تربةُ الهُدا
ةِcompletion of 'the guides' فَضِلّيso go astray أوor اهتَديbe guided
ةِ فَضِلّي أو اهتَدي
This is the soil of the guiding
This is the soil of guidance
ones—so go astray, or be guided.
So excel or be guided
أينwhere دعواكyour claim فيin الهَوىlove
أين دعواك في الهَوى
اصدرِيleave the watering place عنهُfrom it أوor رِدِيcome to drink
اصدرِي عنهُ أو رِدِي
Where is your claim to love?
Where is your call in passion
Depart from it, or come to drink.
Issue from it or refuse it
ربّmany a دمعٍtear أرَقتُهI shed it
ربّ دمعٍ أرَقتُه
فيin ظلالٍshadows وفيand in دَدِidle play
في ظلالٍ وفي دَدِ
Many a tear I have shed
Lord of tears I shed
in shadows and in idle play,
In shadows and in chaff
وسَوامٍand grazing livestock سَرحتُهI sent it to pasture
وسَوامٍ سَرحتُه
فيin حِمىthe sanctuary of اللَهGod مُعتَدِtransgressing
في حِمى اللَه مُعتَدِ
and many a herd I sent to pasture
And cattle I pastured
in God's sanctuary, as a trespasser.
In the sanctuary of God transgressing,
لستِyou are not منيof me ولستand I am not منof
لستِ مني ولست من
كِyou (attached pronoun) متىwhenever خُنتِyou betray مَوعِديmy promised meeting
كِ متى خُنتِ مَوعِدي
You are not of me, nor am I of
You are not of me and not of you
you, if ever you betray my promised meeting.
When you broke your promise to me
فاستمِدّيso seek a supply of حُمرَred الدُّموthe tears (first part)
فاستمِدّي حُمرَ الدُّمو
عُcompletion of 'the tears' مِنfrom القلبِthe heart تُمدَدِيyou will be supplied
عُ مِن القلبِ تُمدَدِي
So seek a supply of red
So draw the red tears
tears from the heart; you will be supplied.
From the heart stretching out
وانضحيand splash away عنكfrom yourself ماwhat مضىhas passed
وانضحي عنك ما مضى
واغسِليand wash اليومَtoday بالغَدِwith tomorrow
واغسِلي اليومَ بالغَدِ
And splash away from yourself what has passed,
And sprinkle off you what has passed
and wash today with tomorrow."
And wash today with tomorrow
