قَدalready وَعَظَadmonished الشَّيبُgray hair وناجاكَand whispered to you بَلrather
قَد وَعَظَ الشَّيبُ وناجاكَ بَل
ناداكَcalled to you فَلتُضغِso incline your ear لَهُto it مِنfrom أَمَمnearby
ناداكَ فَلتُضغِ لَهُ مِن أَمَم
Gray hair has admonished you and whispered to you—rather,
The gray hair has admonished you and whispered to you
it has called to you: so incline your ear to it from nearby.
Rather, it has called out to you, so listen to it from hopes
لاno ناطقٌspeaker أَوعَظُmore admonitory مِنthan صامِتٍa silent one
لا ناطقٌ أَوعَظُ مِن صامِتٍ
قامَrose خَطيباًas a preacher فيamong فُروعِbranches اللِّمَمthe tresses
قامَ خَطيباً في فُروعِ اللِّمَم
No speaker admonishes more than a silent one
No speaker preaches better than a silent one
who has risen as a preacher among the branches of the tresses.
It stood up to preach on the branches of misfortunes
هذاthis نذيرُwarning herald اللَهِGod قامَتhas risen بهِthrough it
هذا نذيرُ اللَهِ قامَت بهِ
حُجَّتُهُHis proof البَيضاءُthe white فَوقَabove القِمَمthe crowns of heads
حُجَّتُهُ البَيضاءُ فَوقَ القِمَم
This is God's herald of warning; through it rises
This is Allah's warner, over it stood
His white proof above the crowns of heads.
His white proof above the summits
ياO عَوضُTime ماhow أَعجَلَswift ماwhat عُضتَهُyou gave it in exchange
يا عَوضُ ما أَعجَلَ ما عُضتَهُ
حمامَةًa dove ناصعةًpure-white مِنin place of حُمَمblack coals
حمامَةً ناصعةً مِن حُمَم
O Time, how swiftly you have made the exchange—
O substitute of what was hastened of what you have bitten
a pure-white dove for black coals!
A shining dove from doves
بادَرتyou hastened to أَمراًa matter لَمdid not تَخَفyou fear فَوتَهُmissing it
بادَرت أَمراً لَم تَخَف فَوتَهُ
هلاwhy not تأنَّيتyou took your time الحُلىthe jewels بالغمَمamid thick locks
هلا تأنَّيت الحُلى بالغمَم
You hastened to something you did not fear missing;
You rushed into something you did not fear its loss
why did you not take your time with these jewels amid thick locks?
Why didn't you slow down the adornments with clouds
