ولقدand indeed وجدتI found الصبرpatience بعدكمُafter you
ولقد وجدت الصبر بعدكمُ
صعباًdifficult وكنتand I was أظنّهthinking it سهلاeasy
صعباً وكنت أظنّه سهلا
And indeed I found patience after your departure
After you left, I found patience so hard
Difficult, though I had thought it easy.
Though once I thought it very mild and meek
واستعبرتand filled with tears عينيmy eye فقلتso I said لهاto it
واستعبرت عيني فقلت لها
هلاّwhy did you not حذرتbeware of الأعينَthe eyes النجلاwide
هلاّ حذرت الأعينَ النجلا
And my eye filled with tears, so I said to it:
My teary eyes reproached me bitterly
“Why did you not beware of those wide eyes?”
"Why did you not spare eyes so frail and weak?"
لاno مرحباwelcome بالبينto parting منfrom أُجَلٍherds of wild cattle
لا مرحبا بالبين من أُجَلٍ
تنأىrecedes الحياةlife بهthrough it ولاand no أهلاwelcome
تنأى الحياة به ولا أهلا
No welcome to parting from herds of wild cattle;
No welcome to the one who parts us so!
Through it life recedes—no welcome!
All joy in life, he takes, no blessing speak
قدindeed كانwas ليfor me ملكاkingship دُنُوُّكمُyour nearness
قد كان لي ملكا دُنُوُّكمُ
فالآنso now أصبحhas become بُعدكمyour distance عَزلاdethronement
فالآن أصبح بُعدكم عَزلا
Your nearness once was kingship to me;
My kingdom once - your presence, company
So now your distance has become my dethronement.
Now far from you, in barren exile bleak
