The phantom of the one I love came by night—will it grant me joy?

So I ask it, in his stead, to keep my promised tryst.

It visited us late at night, when the hills were overwhelmed

By a soot-black hue drawn from pitch-dark nights.

Then say to it, as the night parts, 'Welcome,

And a warm welcome to the morning made anew!'

My embrace tugged at his sides, and he swayed

Like the bending branch of a bān tree.

I strung upon him a necklace of kisses, interspersed

    With tear-pearls, paired and single.

By kohl-black darkness that touched no eyelid with antimony.

It stood apart; kohl was not intended, but rather

Repeated, reiterated speech followed in succession.

    فماذا ترى مولاي أنتَ وسيدي

    I resolved to assail your phantom in sleep;

What do you think—you, my master and my lord?

No—by the cool nectar from your front teeth,

Delicious: whenever we ask the cup about it, it bears witness.

Your temple-locks were curled only because they

Are snares for us: capture and hunt whenever you wish.

    فما بالُ سَيفٍ في نجادِك مُغمدِ

    You have enough in a sword unsheathed from your eyelids;

Why then a sword sheathed in your baldric?

The cheeks of roses refused all but submission

To the cheek of one graceful and kohl-eyed.

A beloved: I see in his smile the bounty of the age,

Even if you live a life made utterly wretched by misery.

I kiss the cheek of the cup in remembrance of his cheek,

And my heart is held captive at that watering place.

    ففي كُلّ لحظٍ نظرةُ المتزوِّدِ

    And I fill my eyes with him, while thorns torment me;

For in every glance is the gaze of one laying in provisions.

And when our hearts conversed secretly through our eyes,

And in our glances, one offered union and another pursued it,

And sleek steeds we kept from watering places, after

We hurled them into one Farqad star after another.

For them across the wastes by spear-tips, and they found their way.

Toward it, mistaking it for an approach to a watering place.

To the man of high attainments, al-Mustafa ibn Muhammad.

Now, by the light, white blades and the horses charging

With their champions beneath the aimed lances—

Surely most secure on earth are a pearl in the sea's depths,

    A lion's mane, and al-Mu'ayyad's protégé.

Mu'izz al-Mulk, invested with sovereignty, raised a banner

By which one who had lacked guidance finds his way.

If one day I say, 'A benefaction has risen high

From him, with abundant favors,' he begins anew.

He brings tomorrow what will surpass today.

The fragrance of his deeds wafted from a fragrant birth

That nurtured him; a branch's fragrance comes from fragrant stock.

Part from the full moon, ringed by auspicious stars.

Soon, despite his foes, I would have visited my grave.

How many favors he has bestowed on me, favor upon favor!

I shall thank him as gardens thank a raincloud

That brings them renewing rains at evening and returns at dawn.

By your life, no freshly plucked roses or narcissi

Are more fragrant than the scent of everlasting praise.
