Death is written in the pages of lovers.
Death is written in the scrolls of lovers,
And separation, before that, is vexation and reproach.
And separation was predetermined and foretold.
إنif طالgrows long ليليmy night فوجهthen the face الصبحthe dawn مطلعُهُits rising place
منfrom وجهthe face منthe one who هوhe عنfrom عَينَيَّmy two eyes محجوبُhidden
If my night grows long, the face of dawn takes its rise
If my night is long, the face of dawn is its advent,
From the face of him who is hidden from my eyes.
From the face of one who is veiled from my eyes.
منwho ليfor me باعلامِهِby informing him أنِّيthat I لغيبتهbecause of his absence
ذيلa train المدامعthe tears فيon خَدَيَّmy two cheeks مسحوبdrawn along
Who will tell him that, because of his absence,
If only he knew from my symptoms that, because of his absence,
A train of tears trails across my cheeks?
The tail of tears on my cheek is drawn.
كأنّas though أجفانَthe eyelids عينيmy eye منfrom تذكُّرهِremembering him
غُصنa branch مَروحwind-tossed منof الطَّرفاءِthe tamarisk مهَضوبُrain-drenched
As though my eyelids, from remembering him,
It seems that my eyelids, from remembering him,
Were a wind-tossed, rain-drenched tamarisk branch.
Are a supple branch, beaten by the breezes.
