No equal have I when a meaning’s soul is hallowed and flows

Through the body of a word, perfectly formed.

You are the one through whom earth has vied with heaven in glory,

And it cannot match you, should it vie with you.

I circle around pools of your favor, and there is nothing

I can do to reach the water when I am driven away.

Honor a longstanding allegiance, O house of Maslama,

And the similes I have pursued in praising you.

The nights rend my skin, never sparing

Me—what have the nights, woe to them, to do with me?

And indeed, among your retainers I am like your kingdom

Among kingdoms, and like Islam among religions.
