My friends, within the breasts' scabbards

are blades that lay low the summits of the ages.

And our ribs have held hearts

that accept nothing but palaces or graves.

If the noble sleep upon humiliation,

then what advantage has the great over the small?

For earlier, Qays of ‘Abs refused disgrace,

and did not heed the adviser's words.

If indeed they have stumbled—and 'Rise again!' is no answer—

    then may no wombs conceive from loins;

and may they hear in it only with deaf ears,

and may they look in it only with sightless eyes.

And parting from the sons of Sa‘id has left me distraught,

so I cannot tell front from back.
