A greeting like a breeze that wafted from sorrow,

Into whose face the blossoms breathed before dawn,

From the broad-shading, luxuriant cloud, whose striped robes were embroidered

By an arm of the Lion, for whom the Pleiades are a handspan.

Or else, a Ḥazmī, Madhḥijī hand,

From which Madhḥij cleared away, and ʿAmr poured down,

Showering generously upon those sandy tracts and hills:

His thunderclaps a promise, and his lightning good cheer.

O Abū Ḥakam, convey my mouth’s greeting to the two hands

Of Abū Ḥasan—and be gentle, for each is a sea.

And do not forget your right hand: it and generosity

Are two sucklings of the same milk—not silver, nor uncoined gold.
