    فَلا سَمعَ إِلّا ودّ لَو أَنَّهُ أَنفُ

    A greeting whose fragrance whispers to the flowers of the hills;

    So no ear but wishes it were a nose.

    My longing is for those noble traits, for they are

    Indeed the traces of the foremost endeavors whose trail I follow.

    My guide whenever my star strays in the realm of glory,

    Though neither setting nor eclipse has hindered it.

    فَمَجدٌ بِهِ رَسمُ التَواصُلِ لا يَعفو

    He has gone far—may our bond of fellowship never do so;

    For through that glory, the trace of fellowship never fades.

    And he brought it forth, bidding for minds, as though

    An eye of its own watches us from every letter.

    Its lines greet us smiling:

    Is it a mouth opening over ink-dark lips, or a letter?

    Meanings and words, delicate as a blossom

    In the garden, or pure aged wine passed round.

    An abode that set minds swaying, as though

    Its listener's every limb could bend and sway.

    Your hater would pay with his nose for it to be

    Kohl for his eye and an earring in his ear.

    For you are the one without whom no mouth would speak for me,

    Nor a soul stir with thought, nor a hand write.

    فَمِنكَ لَنا نَصرٌ وَأَنتَ لَنا كَهفُ

    My ally, Abu Nasr, against Time, but not against separation;

    For from you comes our victory, and you are our sheltering cave.

    فَلا حافِرٌ يَقضي وِدادي وَلا خُفُّ

    You departed, and neither my sandal-strap nor my mount was with me;

    So neither hoof nor camel's pad can fulfill my devotion.

    فَلا عيشَةٌ تَصفو وَلا ريشَةٌ تَضفو

    Nor, should I set out, am I able to see you off;

    So no life grows serene, nor does any feather grow long.

    فَلا أَدمُعٌ تَهمي وَلا أَضلُعٌ تَهفو

    Your farewell to me tomorrow weighs heavily upon the world;

    So no tears stream, nor do ribs flutter.

    I shall complain to you of parting—enough for me, and oh, what parting!

    Were it anything else, neither recompense nor remedy would be lacking.

    Forgive me—yes, I complain to you of nights

    That passed with drops of my blood upon their claws.

    وَإِن عَريناً غابَ عَنكَ لَمُلتَفُّ

    And a dear friend you have left is surely unadorned;

    And a lion's den without you is surely overgrown.
