ظالمتيmy oppressor فيin الهوىlove لاdo not تَظلميact unjustly
ظالمتي في الهوى لا تَظلمي
فتَصْرميand thus sever حَبلَthe cord مَنَone who لمdid not يصْرِمِsever
فتَصْرمي حَبلَ مَنَ لم يصْرِمِ
You who wrong me in love, do not wrong me,
My cruelty in passion, do not be cruel
by severing the cord of one who has not severed it.
So you cut off the rope of one who did not cut it off
أَهكذاis it thus? باطلاًwithout cause عاقَبتنِيyou punished me
أَهكذا باطلاً عاقَبتنِي
لاnot يَرحمُshows mercy اللَّهُGod مَنwhoever لمdid not يَرحمِshow mercy
لا يَرحمُ اللَّهُ مَن لم يَرحمِ
Have you punished me thus, without cause?
Is this how you have unjustly punished me?
God shows no mercy to one who has shown none.
May God not have mercy on one who has no mercy
قَتلتِyou killed نفساًa life بلاwithout نفسٍa life وماand no
قَتلتِ نفساً بلا نفسٍ وما
ذنبٌa sin بأعظمَgreater منthan سَفكِshedding الدّمِblood
ذنبٌ بأعظمَ من سَفكِ الدّمِ
You took a life without a life to avenge, and no
You killed a soul without a soul, yet
sin is greater than the shedding of blood.
No sin is greater than shedding blood
لمثلِfor the like of هذاthis بكَتْwept عينيmy eye ولاand not
لمثلِ هذا بكَتْ عيني ولا
للمنزلِfor the dwelling القفرِdeserted وللأرْسُمِand for the ruins
للمنزلِ القفرِ وللأرْسُمِ
For the like of this my eye wept, not
It's for this that my eyes wept but not
for the deserted dwelling or the ruins.
For the empty dwelling or the burial ground
ماذاwhat use? وُقوفيmy standing علىover رسمٍa trace عَفاhas faded
ماذا وُقوفي على رسمٍ عَفا
مُخلَوْلقٍworn out دارِسٍeffaced مُسْتعجمِmute
مُخلَوْلقٍ دارِسٍ مُسْتعجمِ
What use is my standing over a faded trace,
What is my standing on tracings gone
worn out, effaced, and mute?
A foreign house, an unfamiliar land
