ودَّعتَنيyou bade me farewell بزَفرةٍwith a sigh واعْتِناقِand an embrace
ثمthen نادَتْshe called متىwhen يكونُwill occur التَّلاقيthe reunion
You bade me farewell with a sigh and an embrace.
You bid me farewell with a sigh and an embrace
Then she called, "When shall we meet again?"
Then called out, when will we meet again?
وتصَدَّتْand she appeared فأشرقَthen shone الصبحُthe dawn مِنهاfrom her
بينَbetween تلكَthose الجيوبِthe necklines والأطواقِand the necklaces
And she appeared, and dawn shone from her
She turned away as dawn broke from her
Between those necklines and necklaces.
Between those folds and wraps
ياO سقيمَlanguid الجفونِthe eyelids منfrom غيرِother than سُقمٍillness
بينَbetween عَينيكَyour two eyes مَصرعُthe place of death العُشَّاقِthe lovers
O you of languid eyelids, though free of illness,
O sleepless from love not sickness
Between your eyes lies the place where lovers die.
Between your eyes lies the slain of lovers
إنَّindeed يومَthe day الفِراقِof parting أَفظعُmost dreadful يومٍday
ليتَنيif only I مِتُّI had died قبلَbefore يومِthe day الفراقِof parting
Indeed, the day of parting is the most dreadful day.
Indeed the day of parting is the most dreadful day
If only I had died before the day of parting.
Would that I had died before the day of parting
