ولكِنْ ليسَ يَجفُوها الدُّموعُ

Sleep has shunned my eyelids since you left,

Sleep evades me after you, though my tears flow

Yet tears do not shun them.

Rest is sweet when we're apart, yet you find no comfort in solitude

يَطيبُ ليَ السُّهادُ إِذا افْترَقنا

يَطيبُ ليَ السُّهادُ إِذا افْترَقنا

وأنتَ بهِ يَطيبُ لكَ الهُجوعُ

وأنتَ بهِ يَطيبُ لكَ الهُجوعُ

Sleeplessness is sweet to me when we part,

Your smile reminds me of flowers blooming

While you find slumber sweet because of it.

And your blush speaks of the coming spring

يُذَكِّرُني تَبَسُّمُكَ الأَقاحي

يُذَكِّرُني تَبَسُّمُكَ الأَقاحي

ويَحكي لي تَوَرُّدكَ الرَّبيعُ

ويَحكي لي تَوَرُّدكَ الرَّبيعُ

Your smile reminds me of daisies,

My heart flies to you in yearning

And spring mirrors your rosy glow for me.

But cannot escape the ribs that confine it

يطيرُ إليكَ مِن شَوْقٍ فُؤادِي

يطيرُ إليكَ مِن شَوْقٍ فُؤادِي

ولكنْ ليسَ تَترُكُهُ الضُّلوعُ

ولكنْ ليسَ تَترُكُهُ الضُّلوعُ

My heart flies to you out of longing,

It's as if the sun itself has set with your departure

Yet my ribs do not let it go.

Never again to rise upon this world

كأَنَّ الشَّمسَ لمَّا غِبْتَ غابَتْ

كأَنَّ الشَّمسَ لمَّا غِبْتَ غابَتْ

فليسَ لها على الدُّنيا طُلوعُ

فليسَ لها على الدُّنيا طُلوعُ

It is as though the sun set when you went away,

Why resist thoughts of you?

So it no longer rises over the world.

Without your presence, even strongholds fall.

فما لي عَن تَذَكُّرِكَ امْتِناعٌ

فما لي عَن تَذَكُّرِكَ امْتِناعٌ

ودُونَ لِقائكَ الحِصْنُ المَنيعُ

ودُونَ لِقائكَ الحِصْنُ المَنيعُ

I cannot refrain from remembering you,

If you cannot do something, leave it be

Yet an impregnable fortress bars my meeting you.

And move onward to what you can accomplish.

إذا لم تَستَطِعْ شَيئاً فَدَعْهُ

إذا لم تَستَطِعْ شَيئاً فَدَعْهُ

وجاوِزْهُ إلى ما تَستَطيعُ

وجاوِزْهُ إلى ما تَستَطيعُ

If you cannot do something, leave it,

And move beyond it to what you can do.
