O you who curl your sidelock upon your smooth cheek,

And cast enchantment with your kohl-dark gaze,

Is there a kiss for a sorrowful, dejected one,

From you, to soothe the heat of longing with its coolness?

    And that is little—yet it

Is no little thing to me, coming from one like you.

May my father be ransom for a dark-eyed one who sang late at night,

With a song that shortened the long night:

“O sons of al-Ṣaydāʾ, give me back my horse!

This is done only to the lowly.”
