يَاO أَيُّهاyou المَشْغُوفُconsumed بِالحُبِّby love التَّعِبْweary
يَا أَيُّها المَشْغُوفُ بِالحُبِّ التَّعِبْ
كمْhow much أَنْتَyou فيin تَقْريبِbringing near مَاwhat لاnot يَقْترِبْdraws near
كمْ أَنْتَ في تَقْريبِ مَا لا يَقْترِبْ
O you, consumed by love and weary!
O you who are obsessed with unattainable love
How much you strive to bring near what will not draw near!
How close you are to what cannot be attained
دَعْabandon وُدَّaffection مْنْone who لاnot يَرْعَويrestrains himself إذاwhen غضِبْhe grows angry
دَعْ وُدَّ مْنْ لا يَرْعَوي إذا غضِبْ
وَمَنْand one who إِذَاif عَاتَبْتَهُyou reproach him يَوْماًone day عَتبْhe reproaches
وَمَنْ إِذَا عَاتَبْتَهُ يَوْماً عَتبْ
Abandon the affection of one who shows no restraint when angry,
Leave those who do not care when angered
And of one who, if you reproach him one day, reproaches you in turn.
And those who, when reproached, reproach back
إِنَّكَindeed you لاnot تَجنيyou gather مِنَfrom الْشَّوكِthorns العِنَبْgrapes
إِنَّكَ لا تَجني مِنَ الْشَّوكِ العِنَبْ
Indeed, you do not gather grapes from thorns.
Surely you will not reap grapes from thorns
