يَاO دهْرُTime ماwhat لِيَfor me أُطَّبيI am beguiled
يَا دهْرُ ما لِيَ أُطَّبي
وأَنْتَand you غَيرُnot مُواتِaccommodating
وأَنْتَ غَيرُ مُواتِ
O Time, why am I beguiled,
O life, why do I praise you
when you are unaccommodating?
When you are not faithful?
جَرَّعْتَنيyou made me swallow غُصَصاًchoking sorrows بِهَاwith them
جَرَّعْتَني غُصَصاً بِهَا
كدَّرْتَyou clouded صَفْوَserenity حَياتيmy life
كدَّرْتَ صَفْوَ حَياتي
You made me swallow choking sorrows, with which
You made me drink bitterness
you clouded the serenity of my life.
And troubled the serenity of my life.
أَيْنَwhere الَّذينthose who تَسَابَقُواraced one another
أَيْنَ الَّذين تَسَابَقُوا
فيin المَجدِglory لِلغايَاتِtoward the utmost heights
في المَجدِ لِلغايَاتِ
Where are those who raced one another
Where are those who raced
toward the utmost heights of glory?
For glory and high goals?
قوْمٌa people بهمْthrough them رُوحُthe spirit الحَياlife (word continues)
قوْمٌ بهمْ رُوحُ الحَيا
ةcompletes 'life' تُرَدُّis restored فيin الأَمْوَاتِthe dead
ة تُرَدُّ في الأَمْوَاتِ
A people through whom the spirit of life
A people in whom was the spirit of life,
is restored to the dead.
Who could revive the dead.
وإِذاand whenever هُمُthey ذَكرُواrecalled الإسَاwrongdoing (word continues)
وإِذا هُمُ ذَكرُوا الإسَا
ءَةَcompletes 'wrongdoing' أَكْثَرُواmultiplied الحَسَناتِgood deeds
ءَةَ أَكْثَرُوا الحَسَناتِ
And whenever they recalled wrongdoing,
And when they recalled harm done,
they multiplied good deeds.
