ياO وجهَface مُعتذرٍone who begs pardon ومُقلةَand eye ظالمِa wrongdoer
كمhow much منof دَمٍblood ظُلماًunjustly سَفكتَyou have shed بلاwithout دَمِblood to avenge
O face of one who begs pardon, and eye of a wrongdoer!
O face making excuses yet oppressive
How much blood you have unjustly shed, with no blood to avenge!
How much blood unjustly have you shed without shedding blood
أوَجدْتِhave you found وَصْليunion with me فيin الكتابthe Book مُحرَّماًforbidden
ووجدْتِand you found قَتْليkilling me فيهِin it غيرَnot مُحرَّمِforbidden
Have you found union with me forbidden in the Book,
You made my affection in scripture forbidden
And found killing me not forbidden in it?
Yet you found my murder permissible and not forbidden
كمmany a جنَّةٍgarden لكِof yours قدalready سكنْتُI have dwelt in ظِلالَهاits shade
مُتفكِّهاًreveling فيin لذَّةٍpleasure وتَنعُّمِand luxurious ease
In the shade of many a garden of yours I have dwelt,
How many heavens have I dwelled under their shade
Reveling in pleasure and luxurious ease.
Reveling in bliss and luxury
وشربتُand I drank فيin خمرِthe wine of العيونِeyes تعلُّلاًseeking solace
فإذاthen when انتشَيْتُI become intoxicated أجودُI give generously جودَthe bounty of المِرْزَمِMirzam (a rain-associated star)
And I drank of the wine of eyes for solace;
And I drank from the wine of eyes intoxicated
Then, when intoxicated, I give as lavishly as Mirzam.
When I was satiated, I would give generously like clouds raining heavily
وإذاand when صحَوْتُI become sober فماthen not أقصِّرُI fall short عنof ندىgenerosity
وكماand as علمتِyou have known شَمائليmy character traits وتكرُّميand my generosity
And when sober, I do not fall short in generosity;
And when I awoke I would not refrain from generosity
And my character and generosity are as you have known.
As you knew my noble character and generosity
