يا فِتْنةً بُعثتْ على الخَلقِ
ماnot بينَهاbetween her والموتand death منany فَرْقِdifference
ما بينَها والموت من فَرْقِ
O enchantment sent upon humankind,
Oh beauty that came to seduce all people
there is no difference between her and death.
There's no difference between you and death
شَمسٌa sun بَدَتْappeared لكَto you منfrom مَغاربهاher western horizons
شَمسٌ بَدَتْ لكَ من مَغاربها
يَفْترُّparts in a smile مبْسِمُهاher smiling mouth عنِto reveal البَرْقِlightning
يَفْترُّ مبْسِمُها عنِ البَرْقِ
A sun that appeared to you from her western horizons,
A sun has risen in the west for you
her smiling mouth parts to reveal lightning.
Its smile outshines lightning
ماnot كنتُI was أَدريI know قبلَbefore رُؤيتهاseeing her
ما كنتُ أَدري قبلَ رُؤيتها
للشَّمسِfor the sun مُطَّلعاًa rising-place سِوىother than الشَّرقِthe east
للشَّمسِ مُطَّلعاً سِوى الشَّرقِ
Before seeing her, I had not known
I did not know before seeing you
the sun to have a rising-place other than the east.
That the sun could rise from anywhere but the east
ياO مَنْone who يَضِنُّis miserly بفضلِwith the surplus of نائِلِهِhis bounty
يا مَنْ يَضِنُّ بفضلِ نائِلِهِ
لوif فيin يَدَيهhis two hands مَفاتِحُthe keys of الرِّزقِsustenance
لو في يَدَيه مَفاتِحُ الرِّزقِ
O one who would withhold his surplus bounty,
O you who resents the blessings given to others
were the keys of sustenance in his hands!
If only you had the keys to destiny in your hands
