لاno غَرْوَwonder إِنْif نالَhas taken hold مِنْكَof you السُّقْمُsickness والضَّررُand harm
قَدْmay تُكْسَفُbe eclipsed الشَّمْسُthe sun لاno بَلْrather يُخْسَفُis eclipsed القَمَرُthe moon
No wonder if sickness and harm have taken hold of you.
No wonder if illness and harm befall you,
The sun may be eclipsed—no, rather, the moon may be eclipsed.
The sun itself may be eclipsed, let alone the moon.
ياO غُرَّةَradiant face القَمَرِof the moon الذَّاويwithering غضارَتُهاits freshness
فِداًa ransom لِنُورِكَfor your light مِنِّيfrom me السَّمْعُhearing والبصَرُand sight
O radiant face of the moon, whose freshness is withering,
O you, whose waning moon-like beauty is fading,
Let my hearing and sight be a ransom for your light.
My hearing and sight are sacrificed for your light.
إنif يُمسِis at evening جِسْمُكَyour body مَوْعوكاًfever-stricken بصالِيةٍwith scorching fever
فهكَذاthen so too يُوعكُis fever-stricken الضِّرغامَةُthe lion الهَصِرُcrushing
If evening finds your body racked with scorching fever,
If your body is afflicted with some ailment,
so too is the crushing lion racked with fever.
So the sturdy pillars are shaken down.
أنتَyou الحُسامُthe keen sword فإنْand if تُفللْare nicked مَضارِبُهُits cutting edges
فقبْلهُfor before it مَاindeed (emphatic particle) يُفلُّis nicked الصَّارِمُthe keen blade الذَّكَرُhard-tempered
You are the keen sword; if its cutting edges are nicked,
You are the sword, if its strokes fail to hit,
for the keen, hard-tempered blade has indeed been nicked before it.
It is still not what the sharp blade fails to do.
رُوحٌa spirit مِنَof المَجْدglory فيin جُثمانa body مَكرُمَةٍof nobility
كأنَّماas though الصُّبْحُdawn مِنْfrom خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks يَنْفجِرُbursts forth
A spirit of glory in a body of nobility,
A spirit of glory in a revered body,
as though dawn were bursting forth from his cheeks.
As though the dawn were bursting through his cheeks.
لَوif غالَhad overcome مَجْلودَهُhis strength شَيءٌanything سِوىother than قَدَرٍfate
أكْبَرْتُI would have marveled ذَاكَat that وَلكِنْbut غالَهُhas overcome him القَدَرُfate
If anything other than fate had overcome his strength,
Had anything made it suffer save destiny,
I would have marveled at that—but fate has overcome him.
I would denounce that, but destiny made it suffer.
