مُعَذِّبَتيmy tormentor رِفْقاًgently بِقَلبٍwith a heart مُعذَّبِtormented
وإِنْand if كانَis يُرْضِيْكِpleases you العَذابُthe torment فَعَذِّبيthen torment
My tormentor, be gentle with a tormented heart.
Torture me gently, my tortured heart,
And if torment pleases you, then torment me.
And if torment brings you joy, then torment me.
لَعَمْريby my life لَقْدindeed باعَدْتِyou kept distant غَيْرَnot مُبَاعدٍone who keeps others distant
كماjust as أَنَّنيthat I قَرَّبْتُI drew close غَيرَnot مُقَرِّبِone who draws others close
By my life, you have held at a distance one who does not hold you at a distance,
By my life, you've distanced yourself beyond distance,
just as I have drawn close one who does not draw me close.
Just as I've drawn near beyond nearness.
ِبنَفْسيَwith my life as ransom بَدْرٌa full moon أَخْملَoutshone البدْرَthe full moon نُورُهُits light

My life be ransom for a full moon whose light has outshone the full moon,
Myself is a full moon eclipsed of its light,
and a sun: whenever she rises before the sun, it sets.
A sun, that when it rises toward the sun, sets.
لَوَif انَّthat امْرأَImru’ القيْسِal-Qays بْنَson of حُجْرٍHujr بَدَتْshe appeared لَهُto him
لَماthen not قَالَhe said مُرَّاyou two, pass بيwith me علىby أُمِّUmm (mother of) جُنْدُبِJundub
Had she appeared to Imru’ al-Qays, son of Hujr,
If Imru’ al-Qays's woman had appeared to him,
he would not have said, 'You two, take me past Umm Jundub.'
He'd not have said, “Away with you, mother of Jundub!”
