خَرَجْتُI went out أَجْتازُI traverse قَفْراًa wilderness غَيرَnot مُجْتازِtraversed
فَصادَنِيthen he caught me أشهَلُgray-blue العَينَينِin both eyes كالبازِlike a goshawk
I went out to traverse an untrodden wilderness.
I set out to cross a path none had crossed before,
Then one with gray-blue eyes, like a goshawk, caught me.
When I was met by one with hawk-like piercing eyes.
صَقْرٌa falcon علىon كَفهِhis palm صَقْرٌa falcon يُؤلّفُهُhe tames it
ذاthis one فوقَatop بَغْلٍa mule وَهَذاand this one فَوقَatop قُفَّازِa glove
A falcon, upon whose hand is a falcon he tames.
A hawk perched on his wrist, another above saddle,
This one atop a mule, and this other atop a glove.
One above his glove, the other atop his hood.
كمhow many مَوعدٍa promise لِيَfor me مِنْfrom أَلحاظِthe glances مُقْلَتهِhis eye
لوif only أَنَّهُthat it مَوْعِدٌa promise يُقْضىis fulfilled بإِنجازِthrough fulfillment
How many promises I have from the glances of his eye!
How many times has his glance made promises,
If only it were a promise brought to fulfillment!
As though a pledge to be fulfilled without fail.
أَبكِيI weep وَيَضْحَكُand laughs مِنِّيat me طَرفُهُhis gaze هُزُءاًin mockery
نَفْسيmy soul الفِداءُthe ransom لِذاكَfor that one الضَّاحكِthe laughing one الهازِيthe mocking one
I weep, and his gaze laughs at me in mockery.
I weep while his eyes laugh mockingly at me,
May my soul be a ransom for that laughing mocker.
My soul is ransom for that smiling mocker’s gaze.
