للَّهِto God دَرُّbounty (expressing wonder) البَينِparting ماwhat يَفعلُit does
يَقتلُit kills مَنwhomever يشاءُit wills ولاand not يُقتلُit is killed
How astounding is parting—what it does!
God's gift is the separation of lovers, He does as He pleases
It kills whomever it wills, yet is not killed.
He kills whom He wants, and is not killed
بانُواthey departed بمنwith the one whom أهواهُI love him فيin ليلةٍa night
ردَّcame back علىupon آخرهاits end الأَوَّلُthe beginning
They departed with the one I love on a night
They spent the night with those whom they loved
Whose beginning came round again at its end.
And the first night was followed by the last
ياO طُولَlength ليلِnight المُبتلىthe afflicted one بالهَوىwith love
وصُبحُهُand his morning منthan ليلهِhis night أطْولُlonger
O how long the night of one afflicted with love!
Oh long night of one suffering from love's pangs
And his morning is longer than his night.
And the dawn following it was even longer
فالدارُso the dwelling قدindeed ذكَّرنيreminded me رسمُهاits traces
ماwhat كِدتُI had almost عنaway from تَذكارِهِremembering it أَذْهَلُI grow oblivious
So the dwelling's traces have reminded me
For the abode reminded me of its outlines
Of what I had almost ceased to remember.
I was about to forget from so much remembrance
هاجَstirred الهوىlove رسمٌa trace بذاتِat Dhāt الغَضىal-Ghaḍā (saxaul trees)

A trace at Dhāt al-Ghaḍā stirred love—
Passion stirred up an outline in the cheek of youth
Worn away, mute, and weathered by time.
Foreign, incomprehensible, transformed
