لمdid not أَدْرِI know جِنِّيٌّa jinni سَبَانيcaptivated me أمor بَشرْa mortal
أَمْor شَمْسُa sun ظُهْرٍnoon أشْرَقَتْshone ليfor me أَمor قَمَرْa moon
I could not tell whether a jinni had captivated me or a mortal,
Or a noonday sun that shone upon me, or a moon,
أَمْor نَاظرٌa gazer يُهْديbestows المَناياdeaths طَرْفُهُhis glance
حَتّىso that كأَنَّas though المَوْتَdeath مِنْهُfrom him فيin النّظَرْthe gaze
Or a gazer whose glance dispenses death,
So that death seems to lie in a look from him.
يُحْييhe revives قَتيلاًone slain مَاnot لَهُhe has مِنْany قاتِلٍkiller
إِلاexcept سِهَامarrows الطَّرْفِthe glance رِيْشَتْwere feathered بِاْلحَوَرْwith the eyes’ contrasting black and white
He revives one slain, who has no killer
But arrows of the glance, feathered with dark-eyed beauty.
ماwhat بالُcondition رَسمِthe trace الوَصْلِunion أَضْحَىbecame دَاثراًeffaced
حَتّىso that لقَدْindeed أَذْكَرَنيreminded me مَاwhat قَدْalready دَثَرْhad faded
Why has the trace of union become effaced,
So that it has recalled to me what had faded away?

A dwelling of Salma’s, when Sulayma was a neighbor,
Desolate, its traces appearing like lines of script.
