نُجُومٌstars فيin المَفارِقِthe hair's partings ماnot تَغُورُset
ولاnor يَجريruns بِهاwith them فَلَكٌa celestial sphere يَدُورُrevolves
Stars in the hair's partings never set,
Nor does a revolving sphere carry them along.
كأنَّas though سَوادَthe blackness لِمَّتهِof his locks ظَلامٌdarkness
أغارَinvaded مِنَfrom المَشيبِgray hair عَليْهِupon it نُورُa light
As though the blackness of his locks were darkness,
Invaded by a light from gray hair.
أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed القَتيرَgray hairs وَعيدُa threat صِدْقٍtruth
لنَاto us لوif only كَانَwere يَزْجُرُناrestraining us القَتيرُgray hairs
Behold, gray hairs are a true warning
To us—if only gray hairs would restrain us.
نَذيرُa herald المَوْتِof death أَرْسَلَهُhe sent him إليْناto us
فَكَذَّبْناso we disbelieved بِماin what جاءَbrought النَّذيرُthe herald
A herald that Death has sent to us,
Yet we disbelieved what the herald brought.
وقُلْناand we said لِلنفُوسِto the souls لعلَّperhaps عُمراًa lifetime
يَطُولُgrows long بِناfor us وَأَطْوَلُهُand its longest قَصيرُshort
And we told our souls, "Perhaps a lifetime
Will stretch on for us"—yet the longest is short.
مَتىwhen كذبتْproved false مَواعِدُهاtheir promises وخانَتْand betrayed
فَأوَّلُهاthen their first وَآخِرُهاand their last غُرورُdelusion
When their promises prove false and treacherous,
Then their first and last are delusion.
لقدindeed كادَalmost السُّلوُّforgetfulness يُميتُkills شَوقِيmy longing
وَلكنْand yet قَلَّماseldom فُطِمَwas weaned الكَبيرُthe grown man
Indeed, forgetfulness almost killed my longing,
But a grown man is seldom weaned.
كأنِّيas though I لمnot أَرُقْI charmed بَلْrather لمnot تَرُقنيthey charmed me
شُمُوسٌsuns فيwithin الأكِلةِthe canopies أوor بُدُورُfull moons
As though I had never charmed—rather, never been charmed
By suns within canopies, or full moons;
ولَمْand did not ألقَI find المُنَىwishes فيin ظلِّthe shade لَهْوٍof pleasure
بِأَقمارٍwith moons سَحَائِبُهاtheir clouds السّتُورُthe curtains
Nor attained my wishes in pleasure's shade,
With moons whose clouds were curtains.
