لاdo not تَبكِweep for ليلىLayla ولاnor ميَّهMayya
ولاand do not تَندُبَنْlament راكباًa rider نِيَّهa destination
Do not weep for Layla or Mayya,
Do not cry, Layla, nor shed a tear,
Nor lament a rider bound for his destination.
Nor mourn for a departing companion.
وبكِّand weep for الصّباyouth إذwhen طَوىfolded ثوبَهُits robe
فلاfor no أحدٌone ناشرٌunfolding طَيَّهits folds
And weep for youth, when it folded its robe,
But cry for the morning breeze when it folds its garment,
For no one can unfold its folds.
For none will spread its folds again.
ولاnor القلبُthe heart ناسٍforgetful لِماof what قدalready مَضىhas passed

ولاnor تاركٌabandoning أَبَداًever غَيَّهits waywardness
Nor does the heart forget what has passed,
Nor does the heart forget what has passed,
Nor will it ever abandon its waywardness.
Nor ever leaving its anguish.
ودَعْand leave aside قولَthe words of باكٍone weeping علىover أَرسُمٍruins
فليسَfor … are not الرّسومُthe ruins بمَبكيَّهto be wept over
And leave aside the words of one weeping over ruins,
And cease the words of one who weeps over traces,
For the ruins are not to be wept over.
For traces are not to be wept over.

My two friends, turn aside to the remains of a dwelling
My friend turned aside at the ruins of a house,
Left empty of Sulayma and of Mayya.
Deserted by Sulayma and Meyya.
