A dark-eyed beauty whom love caressed among dark-eyed maidens—
Her glances ruled over fate.
نَظرتْshe looked إِليَّat me بِمُقْلَتَيْwith the two eyes of أُدمانَةٍa white gazelle
وَتَلَفّتتْand she turned بِسوالفِwith the neck-sides of اليَعْفُورِthe gazelle fawn
She looked at me with a white gazelle's eyes,
And turned with the neck of a gazelle fawn.
وَكأنَّماand as though غاضَsank الأَسىsorrow بجُفُونهاinto her eyelids
حَتَّىuntil أتاكَit came to you بِلؤلؤٍwith pearls مَنْثُورِscattered
And it was as though sorrow had sunk into her eyelids,
Until it came to you bearing scattered pearls.
