O Abu Salih, where are all the generous men?

Point me to a generous man, for a generous man brings contentment.

Is what people say of Hatim’s generosity true?

And was Ibn Sinan a man of bounty?

Who will defend me against the unworthy successors they left behind—

    stupidity, disgraceful meanness, and callousness?

Stones of miserliness that give nothing, though sometimes

water gushes forth from solid stones.

And even if Moses came striking with his staff,

the misers would not gush forth at his stroke.

The continued life of base men is death to them,

just as the death of the most generous is enduring life.

    عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ اللهِ العَزيزِ عَفَاءُ

    It is hard for them to let their hands give freely;

may ruin from God the Mighty fall upon them!
