كآبَةُthe gloom of الذُّلِّhumiliation فيin كتابيmy letter
وَنَخْوَةُand the pride of الْعزِّhonor فيin جَوابيmy reply
The gloom of humiliation is in my letter,
and the pride of honor in my reply.
قَتَلْتَyou killed نَفْساًa soul بِغَيرِwithout نَفْسٍa soul
فَكيْفَso how تَنْجُوwill you escape مِنfrom الْعذابِpunishment
You have killed a soul, not in requital for another;
so how will you escape punishment?
خُلِقْتَyou were created مَنْfrom بَهْجَةٍbeauty وَطِيبٍand fragrance
إذْwhile خُلِقَwas created النَّاسُhumankind مِنْfrom تُرابِdust
You were created from beauty and fragrance,
while humankind was created from dust.
وَلَّتْhas departed حُمَيَّاthe ardor of الْشَّبابِyouth عَنِّيfrom me
فَلْهفَand oh, the grief of نَفْسيmy soul علىfor الشَّبابِyouth
The ardor of youth has left me;
and oh, my soul's grief for youth!
أَصْبَحْتُI awake وَالشَّيْبُwith gray hair قَدْalready عَلانيcovering me
يَدْعُوcalling حَثْيثاًinsistently إلىfor الخضَابِhair dye
I awake with gray hair already covering me,
calling insistently for hair dye.
