The heart has sobered, save for a thought that stirs sorrow,

Attended by a sigh entwined with longing.

Yes, at times the bonds of its resolve are loosened

By gazelles' necks and the eyes of wide-eyed beauties,

Plucking the kernels of hearts when they gaze,

With the magic of eyes and the languor of eyelids.

And richly embroidered wraps, beneath which ripened

The fruits of breasts, not the fruits of boughs.

They wore striped cloaks like the blossoms of spring—

Garments of youthful dalliance, not a madman's garments.

They rent the skin of night, revealing the radiance of faces

    That drive minds mad—what madness!

Faces through which bliss flowed, and which were crowned

    With cheek-roses plucked by eyes.

I shall don a robe of patient endurance against sorrows,

Even if it proves no strong defense at the meeting.

But how, when I have a heart that, when the east wind blows,

Calls forth a longing hidden in the breast?

And all that lay still within it is stirred

By the call of doves that did not spend the night in their nests.

And indeed, the stirring I feel at a dove's weeping

Is like that of a grieving man I treated with sorrows.

As though the doves of the thicket, when they answered one another,

Were a grieving soul who wept out of pity for another.
