أَيَقْتُلُنيwill it kill me? دائيmy ailment وَأَنتَwhile you طَبيبيmy physician
قَريبٌnear وَهلْand is منْone who لاnot يُرىis seen بقَريبِtruly near
Will my ailment kill me while you, my physician,
Does my malady kill me while you're my doctor?
are near? Yet is one unseen truly near?
A doctor who's near, though the near stays unseen.
لَئِنْeven if خُنْتَyou betrayed عَهْدِيmy pledge إنَّنيindeed I غَيْرُnot خَائنٍfaithless
وَأَيُّand what مُحبٍّlover خَانَbetrayed عَهْدَthe pledge of حَبِيبِa beloved
Even if you have broken faith with me, I am not faithless;
If you break your vow, I'm no oath-breaker,
And what lover has ever broken faith with a beloved?
What lover ever betrayed his darling's trust?
وَسَاحِبَةٍand many a woman trailing فَضْلَthe excess length of الذُّيُولِthe hems كأَنَّهَاas though she were

And many a woman trailing her long skirts, as though she were
A gale on the dune, she sways like a branch
A slender stem of sweet basil above a sand dune.
of sweet basil above the high ground.

أَطِعْنيheed me وَخُذْand take مِنْof وَصلِهَاintimacy with her بِنَصيبِa share
Whenever she emerged from her secluded chamber, my companion said:
When her breasts showed from her shift, my friend said:
“Heed me, and gain a share of intimacy with her.”
"Obey me. Take some when her gown gapes."
فَماfor not كُلُّevery ذيpossessor of لُبٍّsense بِمُؤْتِيكَone who offers you نُصْحَهُhis sincere counsel
وَمَاand not كُلُّevery مُؤْتٍone who offers نُصْحَهُhis sincere counsel بِلَبِيبِwise
For not everyone with sense will offer you his sincere counsel,
Not every bright one offers you wisdom;
Nor is everyone who offers his sincere counsel wise.
not every giver of counsel is wise.
