مَا لَهُ مِنْ حِيلَةٍ أَوْ عِلاجْ
You cracked my heart as glass is cracked;
She shattered my heart as glass is shattered.
it has no recourse, no cure.
There is no recourse or cure for it.

فَالهوى مِنِّي لِرُوحِي مِزاجْ
Her sidelong glances mingled my soul,
Her glances mingled with my soul;
so the passion within me became my soul’s very nature.
So my love is blended into my soul.

O slender branch above a hillock of fine sand,
O slender branch above a mound of sand,
and sand dune beneath an ivory form!
And dune beneath a statue of ivory!

You are my light in the darkness of night,
You are my light in the darkness of night,
and my lamp when no other lamp remains.
And my lamp when the lamp is gone.
