And one brimming with the water of youth—there surged
Springs of youth once bubbled and scattered,
Within him raptures of youth and coyness,
With saplings of early life and charm.
كماas اهتزَّswayed بانٌa bān (moringa) tree منamong أَكاليلِgarlands of رَوضةٍa garden
تُلاعبهُplay with it ريحاthe two winds صَباًthe east wind وشمالِand the north wind
As a bān tree swayed among a garden’s garlands,
Like a branch in a garden of garlands
The east and north winds playing with it.
Swayed gently by zephyr and storm.
تَعلَّمَlearned منهُfrom him الهَجرَestrangement طَيفُthe phantom of خَيالهِhis image
هُدُوّاًin the still of night فماso not يَلقاهُmeets it طَيفُthe phantom of خيالِيmy image
The phantom of his image learned estrangement from him,
From it estrangement my phantom learned,
In the still of night, so the phantom of my image never meets it.
So it shuns me, and shuns my phantom's call.
وأَعرضَand he turned away حتىuntil عادَhe came to يُعرضُturn away فيin المُنَىwishes
ويَمنَعُand he prevents ذِكراهُthe memory of him الخُطورَcrossing بباليthrough my mind
And he turned away, till he turned away even in my wishes,
And it turned away, till in death it spurned,
And keeps the memory of him from crossing my mind.
Denying my heart its memory's thrall.
