    And many a host with interlaced spears,

    Death flashes at its summits.

    When it treads a land's rugged ground,

    The lofty peaks of its hills are flattened.

    إذا رأى فرصةً قَضاها

    A forest lion within him leads it;

    When he sees an opportunity, he seizes it.

    Swords advance at his direction,

    Death races ahead along their edges.

    إذا انْتَضى عزمَهُ انْتضاها

    White blades that lodge, blackened, in hearts;

    When he unsheathes his resolve, he unsheathes them.

    The birds follow him among the foes,

    Gleaning grassy fodder from the foes' kidneys.

    He advanced when every lion shrank back

    From death's arena at the sight of it.

    So he plunged the horses into depths

    Whose twin maws gape with death.

    فعافَها القومُ واشْتَهاها

    The faces of death bowed before him;

    So the men shunned them, while he craved them.
