ذُكورَhard-steeled swords الهِنْدِof India فيin أيْديthe hands ذُكورِof men
And many a battlefield where the fates brandish
In a fierce battle where death shakes its wings,
India's hard-steeled swords in the hands of men.
The swords of Indian men in the hands of swordsmen,
لوامِعُgleaming blades يُبْصِرُsees الأعْمَىthe blind person سَناهاtheir radiance

Gleaming blades—the blind can see their radiance,
Flashing blades that would make the blind see their gleam,
And before them the sighted eye goes blind.
Yet the sighted's eyes are blinded before them,
وخافِقَةِand fluttering الذَّوائِبِstreamers قَدْalready أَنافتْhas risen high

And a banner with fluttering streamers has risen high
With thrashing ponytails that toss with pride
Above a crimson host with keen spear-points.
Above a rosy cheek of smooth complexion,

Eagles of death circle around it;
Circling them are ravens of death
They snatched hearts from breasts.
That snatched hearts from chests,
بيومٍon a day راحَwent فيin سِرْبالِa tunic ليلٍof night
فَماso not عُرفَwas distinguished الأصيلُlate afternoon منَfrom البُكورِearly morning
On a day that passed in night's tunic,
On a day that passed in the gown of night,
So late afternoon could not be told from early morning.
So the noble was not known from the commoner,
وَعَيْنُand the eye الشَّمْسof the sun تَرْنُوgazes فيin قَتامٍbattle-dust
رُنُوَّthe gazing البِكرِof the virgin maiden ماparticle in 'between' بَينَbetween السُّتورِthe curtains
And the sun's eye gazes through the dust,
And the eye of the sun peers into darkness
As a maiden gazes from between the curtains.
Like the glance of an innocent virgin behind her veil,
فَكمso how many قصَّرْتَyou shortened منْof عُمْرٍa life طويلٍlong
بهِon it وأطلْتَand you prolonged مِنْof عُمرٍa life قَصيرِshort
So how many a long life you cut short
So you shortened from a long lifetime with it
On that day, and how many a short life you prolonged!
And lengthened from a short lifetime because of it.
