And a garden of roses, ringed with fresh irises,

Was adorned in the hues of silver and pure gold.

In it I saw a full moon walking on the earth,

And never had I seen a full moon walking on the earth.

    فَقدْ كانَ مِنْهُ البَعْضُ يَصْبُو إِلى الْبَعْضِ

    To one like him, then, let your longing turn, if you are one who longs;

For indeed, one part of him was yearning toward another.

And eat the roses of his cheeks and the pomegranates of his chest,

With suck upon suck and bite upon bite.

And say to the one whose love has consumed the heart,

Though he repays love with hatred:

Abu Mundhir, you have consumed us—so spare some of us.

I beg your mercy! Some evils are easier to bear than others.
