And a battle with a dust-clouded sky, when it unfolds,
When the dusty sky is unveiled,
Leaves its ground the color of crimson dye.
He leaves his land like purple dye.
سَمَوتُI rose لهُtoward it سموَّthe rising of النقعِthe battle-dust فيهِwithin it
بكلwith every مُذَلَّقٍsharpened spear سَلبِslender السِّنَانِthe spearhead
I rose to meet it as the dust rose within it,
Its loftiness equals the height of stars within,
With every sharpened spear, slender of point,
With every finely chiseled and polished fragment.
وكُلَّand every مُشَطَّبِgrooved المَتْنينِthe two sides صافٍgleaming
كلَونِlike the color of الملحِsalt مُنْصَلتٍunsheathed يمانيYemeni
And every gleaming sword with both sides grooved,
And all the even surfaces are pure,
Like salt in color, unsheathed, Yemeni.
Like the color of Yemeni salt crystals.
كأنَّas though نهارَهُits day ظلماءُthe darkness of ليلٍa night
كواكبُهُits stars منَof السُّمْرِthe brown spears اللِّدانِthe supple ones
As though its day were the darkness of night,
As if its day were the dark of night,
Whose stars are supple brown spears.
And its stars were embers glowing bright.
