أَوْمَتْgestured إِليكَto you جُفونُهاher eyelids بِوَادعِwith a farewell
خَوْدٌa tender maiden بَدَتْappeared لكَto you مِنْfrom وَراءِbehind قِناعِa veil
Her eyelids signaled farewell to you.
A tender maiden appeared to you from behind a veil,
بَيضاءُfair-skinned أَنماهاnurtured her النَّعيمُluxury بِصُفْرَةٍwith a yellow tinge
فَكَأَنَّهاso she is like شَمْسٌa sun بِغَيرِwithout شُعاعِrays
fair-skinned, nurtured by luxury with a yellow tinge,
so she was like a sun without rays.
أَمَّاas for الشَّبابُyouth فوُدِّعتْthen were bid farewell أَيّامُهُits days
ووَداعُهُنَّand their farewell مُوَكَّلٌcharged بِوَادعيwith my farewell
As for youth, its days have been bid farewell,
and their farewell is charged with my own farewell.
للَّهِGod bless أَيَّامُthe days الصَّباyouth لوif only أَنَّهاthey
كرَّتreturned عَليَّto me بِلَذَّةٍwith pleasure وسَماعِand listening to music
God bless the days of youth—if only they
would return to me with pleasure and music!
