فُؤادِيmy heart رَمَيْتَyou shot وَعَقْليand my reason سَبيتْyou took captive
وَدَمْعيand my tears مَرَيْتَyou drew forth ونَوْمِيand my sleep نَفَيْتْyou banished
You pierced my heart and took my reason captive.
And you drew forth my tears and banished my sleep.
يَصُدُّturns away اصْطِباريmy patience إذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle صَدَدْتَyou turn away
وَيَنْأىand grows distant عَزائيmy solace إِذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle نَأَيْتْyou go far away
My patience turns away whenever you turn away.
And my solace grows distant whenever you go far away.

فَمِثْلُكَfor one like you لمَّاwhen بَداappeared ليto me بَنَيْتْI built
To renew a union whose trace has faded.
For when one like you appeared to me, I built.
علىat رَسْمِthe traces of دَارٍa dwelling قِفارٍdesolate وَقَفْتُI stood
وَمِنand from ذِكرِremembering عَهدِthe days with الحبيبِthe beloved بَكَيْتْI wept
At the traces of a desolate dwelling I stood,
And remembering my days with the beloved, I wept.
