سَقيمةُ الطَّرف بغيرِ سَقَمْ
A sun revealed beneath a robe of darkness,
A sun appeared beneath a cloak of darkness
Languid-eyed, yet free of illness.
Sickly of glance without illness

حَبلي فما فيها مكانُ قدمْ
The earth has narrowed around me since she severed
The earth grew narrow for me when it recoiled
My cord; nowhere on earth is there room for a foot.
My rope has no place for a foot to stand

طوْفَ النَّصارى حولَ بيتِ صنَمْ
A sun, with moons circling her,
A sun and moons going round it
As Christians circle an idol’s shrine.
Like Christians circling an idol's house
