عَاتِبٌa reproacher ظَلْتُI remained لَهُtoward him عَاتِباًreproachful
رُبَّmany a مَطْلوبٍone sought غَداbecame طَالِباa seeker
A reproacher—I kept reproaching him.
I remain blaming the one I blamed,
Many a sought-after one has become a seeker.
Many a sought-after one has become a seeker.
مِنْwhoever يَتُبْrepents عَنْof حُبِّlove for مَعْشُوقِهِhis beloved
لَسْتُI am not عَنْof حُبِّيmy love لَهُfor him تَائِباrepentant
Whoever may repent of loving his beloved,
Whoever repents loving his beloved,
I am not repentant of my love for him.
I have not repented loving him.
فَالْهَوىfor love ليfor me قدَرٌfate غَالِبٌoverpowering
كَيْفَhow أَعْصيI defy القَدَرَthe fate الغَالِباoverpowering
For love is an overpowering fate for me.
For passion is a predestined conqueror for me,
How can I defy that overpowering fate?
How can I disobey the conquering predestination?
سَاكِنَO dweller القَصْرِthe palace وَمَنْand whoever حَلَّهُdwelt in it
أَصْبَحَhas become القَلْبُthe heart بِكُمْwith you all ذَاهِبَاgone away
O dweller in the palace, and all who dwell in it,
The dweller of the palace and the one who abandoned it
My heart has gone away with you.
My heart has come to you in the morning going away.
اعْلَمُواknow, you all أَنِّيthat I لَكُمْto you all حَافِظٌkeeping faith

Know that I keep faith with you,
Know that I am for you a keeper
Present or absent, as long as I live.
Witnessing, as long as I live or go away.
